Sabura back to national duty

Controversial Sabura Khatun returned to the national side after a two-year gap when the talented swimmer was included in the six-member Bangladesh team for the upcoming long-distance swimming competition.

The daylong meet will be held on the River Bhagirathi in Murshi-dabad, West Bengal, on August 29.

Sabura last toured with the national side in 2002 when she took part in the women's swimming competition in Iran. But after that she was ignored following a legal dispute with her then employer Ansar & VDP.

"We selected her because of her brilliant performances in the recently concluded age-group swimming competition in Bogra where she bagged all the 11 gold medals in the competition," said Bangladesh Swimming Federation (BSF) general secretary Shabuddin Ahmed yesterday.

"We will also select her for the next SAF Games if she performs well in this competition," added Shabuddin.

The other members on the team are Lance Corporal Momin, Karar Samedul Islam, SAF gold medalist Rubel Rana, Abdur Hamid Ripon, Momata Shireen.

The team leaves on August 25.
