Rab and police nab 5 criminals, seize arms

Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in separate drives arrested two listed criminals and three alleged operatives of dreaded criminal Kala Jahangir in the last two days.

Acting on a tip off, members of the Cobra, a special police team, raided a house in Zafarabad in Mohammadpur at around 9:45pm Sunday.

Zahirul Islam alias 'Kutta' Zahir, a listed criminal of Mohammadpur Police Station, and his four accomplices opened fire on the Cobra members. Police fired back and arrested bullet-hit Zahir with a revolver and four bullets, while his operatives escaped arrest.

Zahir was admitted to National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation under police custody. He is accused of six criminal charges including two for murders and was a close aide of Galakata Mujibar, who was killed in a recent shootout with police.

In Gopibagh, a team of the Rab-2 led by Captain Anisur Rahman arrested Selim from the government railway colony at about 3:00am yesterday and seized a US-made pistol with two magazines and 13 bullets and a German-made revolver with seven bullets.

Earlier, the same team raided a scrap shop rear of the Uttara Bank in Motijheel and recovered a pipe gun and two bullets.

The Cobra, meanwhile, arrested Kala Jahangir's associates Shawkat and Babla from Kafrul in the city at around 2:00pm. Following their confessional information, the team later arrested Mamun from Parbata in Senpara in Mirpur and recovered a 9mm pistol with two bullets.
