Betar to relay 12 hours of BBC programmes daily
UNB, Dhaka
Bangladesh Betar, the national broadcaster, will now relay 12 hours of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) programmes on 100 FM frequency daily under a new agreement signed yesterday. The BBC World Service programmes in English and Bengali will be heard in Dhaka and the surrounding areas from 6.00am to 12.00 noon and from 5.00pm to 11.00pm. Sirajul Islam, additional secretary of the Information Ministry, and Michel Lobelle, business development manager for Asia and the Pacific of the BBC, signed the agreement. The new agreement consolidates the existing partnership between Bangladesh Betar and the BBC, which started in 1994. Sirajul Islam welcomed the agreement as it confirms and reinforces an existing partnership which has been "extremely positive" for both parties over the last few years. Michel Lobelle observed that Bangladesh is a key market for the BBC World Service, where the BBC has always had many listeners. Bangladesh Betar DG Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury and Joint Secretary of Information Ministry Tofazzel Hossain were present at the signing ceremony.
