US to provide support to face floods: Harry

The United States of America (USA) will provide necessary support to Bangladesh to face the current flood and conduct the post-flood rehabilitation programme.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Harry K Thomas said this while speaking as chief guest at a dinner hosted by America-Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce in New York on Friday.

He said the US embassy in Dhaka is constantly monitoring the flood situation and informing the state department about it.

The USA has already given one million dollar emergency aid, he said, adding that it also provided 2,000 tonnes of foodgrains through World Food Vision.

Sharing his experiences about Bangladesh, Harry said he was delighted with the hospitality of Bangladeshis and their rich cultural heritage.

He said the future of Bangladesh is bright and the country could achieve development rapidly through giving democracy an institutional shape in true sense.

Bangladesh has to go ahead by eliminating corruption and formulating a work plan for future development, he added.

Presided over by Chairman of Trustee Board Mohammad Aminullah, the function was also addressed by President of the chamber Gias Ahmed, President of Expatriate Citizens' Committee Mohadev Sarkar, Consul General of Bangladesh Consulate in New York Mohsin Ali Khan, Prof Mebel Gomage, Dr Wazed Khan, President of American Hospital Consortium Dr Mohammad Habibullah, Syed Tipu Sultan and Solaiman Bhuiyan.
