SC dismisses govt plea to exempt MP's brother from trial
UNB, Dhaka
Reazuddin Ahmed Moni, brother of Nasiruddin Pintu, MP and nine others will be tried in a double murder case as the Supreme Court yesterday dismissed the government appeal for exempting them from trial.Earlier, the Speedy Trial Tribunal and High Court had rejected similar appeals. Police had prosecuted 23 people including Reazuddin for shooting Amir Shakil and Sentu to death in a dispute over Eid cattle market lease in Keraniganj on February 16, 2002. As the trial proceeded, the home ministry in writing instructed the special public prosecutor to drop the names of 10 accused including Reazuddin from trial. The Speedy Trial Tribunal rejected the government petition on August 17 last year. The HC also turned down the government plea. Finally, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition moved by Additional Attorney General Abdur Razzak Khan upholding the HC order. The lawyers in the court lobby resented the government attempt to drop the accused in a double murder case just because they are close to a ruling party MP. The move also raised controversy in the attorney general's office, sources said.
