The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) believes currently descending water levels in the rivers around Dhaka will continue to fall for the next three days.

Selim Bhuiyan, executive engineer of the FFWC of the Water Development Board (WDB), told The Daily Star that if the rainfall does not get adverse and the water levels of the Buriganga, Balu, Shitalakhya and other surrounding rivers continue falling -- Dhaka's floodwaters will take seven to 10 days to retreat.

Until yesterday, water level at the Buriganga's Mill Barracks point was 45cm above the danger level. But the good news is the river is witnessing a fall of water level by 7cm everyday.

At Demra point, the Balu was flowing 183cm above the danger mark yesterday and it is receding by 2 to 3cm a day.

The Shitalakhya at Narayanganj point was flowing 97cm over the danger level and is retreating by 8cm a day.

Besides, water levels of the Dhaleswari, Turag and Tongi Khal, which are still above the danger level, are also receding.

The floodwaters have started subsiding in different eastern areas of the capital as well as in Motijheel, Rampura and Gulshan. "But to see all these areas dry, the rivers should flow below danger level," Bhuiyan added.

If heavy rainfall resumes, inundation of Dhaka's different areas will linger, he pointed out.
