Musharraf orders crackdown on 30 terrorist groups

In the aftermath of recurring terrorist attacks in Karachi, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has ordered a crackdown on 30 terrorist groups in the port city after security agencies presented him a report highlighting the outfits' activities."A comprehensive report covering all aspects of terrorism in Karachi, prepared by the Interior Ministry in collaboration with the provincial government and law-enforcement agencies, was presented to Musharraf. He ordered an immediate crackdown against these groups," a media report said here today. It analysed violence in Karachi in the past two-and-a-half years and said around 30 terrorist groups operated from the city. Fifteen of these groups took part in sectarian violence while the rest were Jehadi outfits fighting against Western interests, the Daily Times quoted officials as saying. It also identified 21 top terrorists who were mostly locals. The "wanted list" included Amjad Farooqi, an activist of banned Jaish-e-Muhammad who is currently vigorously pursued by Pakistan and US security agencies for masterminding the recent assassination attempts on Musharraf. The other wanted terrorists included Asif Chotoo, Naveedul Hassan, Raza Imran and Saud Memon. The report said that the threat of further violence of in the city of 15 million loomed large as "the wanted terrorists were out on prowl. Therefore, the threat of further acts of terrorism looms large".
