Nightly deluge panic Bhola people

Several thousand people of four villages in Bhola Sadar Upazila are marooned as a huge portion of the town protection embankment breached at Nasir Majhi Friday night due to heavy pressure of floodwater from Meghna river.

At least a 50 feet stretch of the embankment has been washed away, official sources there said when contacted from here yesterday.

People were taken aback when waters entered homesteads at night after inundating croplands in Dariamsankar, Balaramsudha, Gangakirti and Nasirmajhi villages, local people said on contact. Panicked people moved to safer places with whatever belongings they could take along, they said.

There was no loss of life or of livestock, they said.

Water Development Board (WDB) officials when contacted admitted "damage" of the Bhola town protection embankment.

The floodwater is not entering Bhola town as there is a "ring embankment", they said. The damaged has been caused is in the old embankment.

State Minister for Religious Affairs Mosaraf Hossain Sahajahan, who hails from Bhola, has directed WDB officials to take immediate steps to stop further breach in the embankment, sources said .
