Michael Kasprowicz bowled Australia to a thumping 149-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first cricket Test with two days to spare on a minefield wicket at Marrara Oval here on Saturday. The big-hearted first-change bowler upstaged his more illustrious bowling teammates to capture 7-39 as Sri Lanka were skittled for 162 chasing an improbable 312 runs over three days for victory. Kasprowicz claimed his third five-wicket haul in his 21st Test match and his best performance in Australia with the Sri Lankans never having a chance after losing their top three batsmen for 30 runs inside 17 overs. It was Australia's fourth consecutive win over Sri Lanka after sweeping their three-Test series in Sri Lanka last March. Kasprowicz, whose Test-best is 7-36 against England at The Oval in 1997, finished on a high with the wickets of Nuwan Zoyza and Lasith Malinga off consecutive balls to clinch victory. "I guess getting a chance to play again for Australia and being involved in Australia is something special for me and being able to have some impact with the ball was certainly special," Kasprowicz said. "Being in the Australian team is all about opportunity and there's a lot of great cricketers in and around the Australian first-class scene and for me having played before and tasted it I was pretty keen to get back and by doing well I can hopefully cement that spot." Fellow paceman Glenn McGrath was named man-of-the-match for his 5-37 off 15 overs to help rout Sri Lanka for 97 in their first innings and hand Australia a match-winning 110-run innings lead. Only Mahela Jayawardene and Tilan Samaraweera put up a substantive fight against the Australian bowlers on Saturday after sharing in a 79-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Jayawardene occupied the crease for 113 balls and 152 minutes before he was bowled by McGrath out in the 49th over for 44. Anchor batsman Samaraweera toiled away for just under two hours for 32 before he became one of Gilchrist's five catches, this time off Kasprowicz. Sri Lanka's hopes of an against-the-odds victory evaporated with the loss of their top three batsmen -- Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara -- before lunch with McGrath conceding little in a dominant 10-over opening spell.
