At least 17 people were injured in a clash when hired goons attacked a landowner and his tenants in an attempt to occupy his house in Dhaka's Sabujbagh yesterday, police and the landowner said. Sudeb Chandra Das said a gang of about 20 armed with pistols, axes, daggers and gunnybagfuls of brickbats attacked his house in Kalibari at 3:30pm to occupy the property for Sohrab, a hotel-owner in Malibagh. "Jumping down from a vehicle, they started beating up my sons Sunai Chandra Das and Bishwanath Chandra Das and my tenants," he said. "They attackers wanted to capture my eight-katha house complex that houses the main house, shops and a hotel." The landowner's family and tenants resisted the attack, inflicting the casualties that included Sudeb, Sunai and Bishwanath. Police arrested eight injured attackers -- Sayed Ali, Jahangir, Moniruddin, Masud Mia, Shahid Mia, Musa Mia and two women at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police said the arrestees confessed to them that Sohrab hired them to capture the house. The attack stems from a long-drawn land dispute between Sudeb and one of his neighbours who sold part of the disputed land to Sohrab, they added.
