College student abducted as marriage proposal turned down

A rejected suitor on Thursday abducted a college student and demanded Tk 2 lakh for her release in Kamlapur village in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah.The family of Azmeri Banu Shilpi, 17, daughter of Amjad Hossain, turned down a marriage proposal of Mukul, son of Altaf Hossain. Police said Mukul used to tease Shilpi on her way to Mahatab Uddin Degree College where she is a higher secondary student. Her family complained to Mukul's father in vain. Mukul, who is alleged to have connections with the outlaws, also threatened Shilpi's family with dire consequence as his overtures were turned down. On Thursday, Mukul and his accomplices picked up Shilpi into a microbus when she was returning home from her college at about 2:00pm and drove off to an unknown place, sources said. Police arrested Mukul's father but could not rescue the girl until yesterday.
