Hasina sued for graft

The Bureau of Anti-corruption (Bac) yesterday sued Awami League President and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former state minister Obaidul Kader and two others on charge of embezzling Tk 41.84 lakh in the construction of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's grave complex at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

The two other accused are former joint secretary of cultural ministry Asaduzzaman Bhuiyan and architect Iqbal Habib of M/S Bhitti Sthopotibrinda Limited.

In the case filed with Ramna Police Station, Bac official Monjur Morshed accused Hasina, leader of the opposition in parliament and the then prime minister, of approving on December 15, 1998 a proposal to appoint Bhitti Sthopotibrinda as the lone consultant for construction of the grave complex without floating any tender, bypassing the memorandum of the Economic Relations Division.

The Executive Committee of National Economic Council approved the project on November 25, 1998 to be implemented at a cost of Tk 1554.16 lakh but the consulting firm presented their model plan and estimate at a meeting chaired by Hasina on November 7 that year, according to the case.

The Bac official stated in the case Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust was to bear the fees of the consultant, but Tk 41.84 lakh in constancy fees was paid illegally from the project fund.

The Bac also filed two cases with Cantonment Police Station yesterday with former army chief general (retd) Mustafizur Rahman as the prime accused in embezzling public money through irregularities in the construction of Bangabandhu Museum in Dhaka Cantonment and through sending an army officer to the UK for training in violation of rules.

The other accused in Bangabandhu Museum case are major general (retd) Abdul Hafiz Mallick, Major General Jiban Kanai Das and contractor Noor Alam Majumder of M/S Majumder Enterprise.

Two other accused in the army officer training case are brigadier (retd) Monjurul Alam and Major Wakar-uz-Zaman.
