Saber takes swipe at Harris over polls remark

Awami League President's Political Secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury yesterday took a swipe at Prime Minister's Political Secretary Harris Chowdhury for his comments that newspapers ran doctored pictures of rigging in Dhaka-10 by-polls, saying such comments were infringement on press freedom.

Referring to Harris's comments to BBC Bangla Service, Saber said the remarks were 'an immoral support' to 'the farcical by-polls' which 'added a black chapter to Bangladesh's democratic history'.

He asked Harris to take legal steps against the newspapers if he was sincere to his comments. "If he fails to do so, people in future will believe the pictures published by the government on the prime minister's activities are tempered with."

Saber, also organising secretary of the main opposition Awami League, said leading newspapers in their reports and pictures exposed the real atmosphere of Dhaka-10 by-polls, 'characterised by widespread fake votes and capture of polling booths by the ruling alliance activists'.
