Govt to table bill for TU at EPZs
Js session resumes today

The government will place a bill allowing limited trade unionism (TU) in the country's EPZs (export procession zones) in the Jatiya Sangsad today as it resumes after a three-day recess.

The government has agreed to introduce trade union rights to the EPZ workers under pressure from US government, which had warned Bangladesh of withdrawal of GSP (generalised system of preference) if new law to allow trade union was not enacted by June 30.

During a talk with journalists on June 28, US Ambassador Harry K Thomas said his government will consider two punitive options -- withdrawal of GSP or export-import bank financing -- if the Bangladesh government failed to enact law allowing trade union in the EPZs by June 30 as agreed.

Law Minister Moudud Ahmed is likely to place two more bills to amend country's criminal law acts and the penal code, Parliament Secretariat sources said.

Besides, the House may witness a noisy debate on 'rigging' in recent by-polls of Dhaka-10 constituency as the opposition bench has planned to raise the issue in parliament.

"We'll raise the issue before the House as we believe the ruling alliance candidate Mosaddak Ali Falu rigged the by-polls through massive fake votes and made a farce of people's right to franchise", Opposition Chief Whip Abdus Shahid told The Daily Star yesterday.

Lawmakers of the main opposition Awami League return to the House today. They walked out on June 30 before passage of the budget for 2004-05 fiscal year, alleging the speaker did not allow them discuss cut motions of the budget grants.

The House business will begin at 4:00pm.
