6-storey house tilts in old city

A six-storey building on Aga Sadek Road in Old Dhaka tilted by at least two inches early yesterday morning as the owner of the adjacent plot excavated his land to construct a new structure.

The family of the owner of the tilted house of holding number 3/4-B Aga Sadek Road and the tenants of the house however are staying at the house putting their lives in great danger. The owner claimed nothing had happened and asked the people who gathered at the spot to go away.

"My building is only eight years old and nothing has happened to it to be worried about. Journalists always blow up things. The owner of the next plot is my brother-in-law and we had a tussle over his foundation. But now we don't have problem," said Jamal Uddin, owner of the tilted house.

The owner of the excavated land, Afsar Ali, started digging up the land 10 days ago. The workers took out all the soil by the tilted building on Friday and the building slanted early yesterday morning.

The owner of the excavated land was putting sands to the bottom of the slanted house and making a piling support with bamboo.

Afsar told The Daily Star yesterday it was their private matters and journalists have nothing to do with it.

Afsar and Jamal also claimed they have proper permission from the Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (Rajuk).

" I have all sorts of permissions. I am not doing anything illegal," said Afsar Ali.

"There is no chance for it to tilt further as they have put sand to the bottom of the building," said Abdul Aziz, an engineer, whom the owners hired yesterday.
