Back to square one

So we demolished the 'roundabouts of Dhaka city' (DS April 12, '04) only to be 'back to square one' (DS June 29,'04). We have to spend around Tk 24 crore to put the electronic traffic signals at 59 points in Dhaka city to save us from traffic strangulation.

But the expensive foreign consultants and equipment suppliers should advise us for complete solution for the projects that they take up. For our drivers we should have 'Box junctions' right away to solve this problem. I cite below an extract from the highway code, practised all over the world.

'Box junctions have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road. You must not enter the box if your exit road or lane from it is not clear. But you may enter the box when you want to turn right and are prevented from doing so only by oncoming traffic or by vehicles waiting to take a right turn.'

Perhaps the DC Traffic and Dhaka City Corporation should take note of this. Incidentally, we may introduce it as soon as a traffic signal is placed in position. It takes only two hours to paint the road, (say between 1am and 5am) and the cost per road crossing is insignificant.

However, there are two conditions. Firstly, we must put up BOX JUNCTION symbolic signs, little ahead of the traffic signals. You may have to inform road users through press and even by distributing leaflets. Secondly, give strict instruction to the attending traffic police, better still deploy well dressed 'traffic wardens' to stop offenders and fine on the spot; between Tk 200 and Tk 1,000. They will pay attention to driving, including the sports bus drivers, semi drivers and the absent minded professors.
