Time to modify the educational system
Rubab Abdullah, Dhaka Cantonment, Dhaka
Our educational system in schools and colleges is without a logical programme capable of fulfilling the hopes of the majority of the youth. It is a system that lacks natural growth and causes confusion among students that has sometimes disastrous consequences. In schools, from nursery to class eight students have to learn general education consisting of science, arts and commerce subjects. The general education aims at imparting general knowledge of all subjects but many of the students cannot handle the burden of all streams of knowledge at a time. As everyone is not equally able and meritorious , many of the students cannot achieve the desired performance in the examinations. Some students can do well in science subjects, some others do well in other disciplines. But at the initial stage they are unable to choose the basic education best suited to them. As a result, despite their best efforts, students fail to acquire a level of progress in education. However, although the basic stream of study can be decided in class ix, the students are bound to study many unnecessary subjects in which they have hardly any interest. For example, an arts student should study civics, economics, geography and any other elective subject . He is not required to study any other subject which he would never like to study in future. But, in many cases, it is seen that due to studying unnecessary subjects students have to draw their attention off from the main disciplines. Consequently, they cannot achieve what they wish to.
