Walking to a new height...
Ashfaque Ahmed, Dhaka
I have to cross the Bangla Motor square almost every morning on my way to work. It is always so crowded. I am talking about the pedestrian's movement especially those people who need to cross the busy thoroughfare. The footbridges built for easy trafficking of pedestrians as well as vehicles on main roads has failed miserably in this city. There is none at this juncture anyway. There is an inherent problem. We just do not want to climb the stairs up to the footbridge. We can assign various reasons for this leisurely act.One comfortable solution could be an escalator or elevator to take the pedestrians to that level and can ease smooth flow of traffic. Indeed it will require adequate calculations before landing on such projects. When the authorities are thinking of sky trains or elevated driveways such arrangements should be incorporated in the planning. We should also have enough green spaces around the city to inject vitality to the air we breathe in. Walking to a height on regular basis could have adverse effect on an individual's health which in turn will cost the society collectively. The pedestrians should not be strained at all. Catering for health care for the people should be considered with utmost urgencies. A healthy society is indeed a boon for the nation. Of course we know our resources are limited but we should fix priorities to bring the best out of the lease. Many nations have proven their worth with fewer resources and adverse backdrops. We need to learn many a thing. Where is that coordinator who will put pieces together for a better abode in our beloved city Dhaka?
