Tk 2 lakh forest dept trees sold off 'illegally'

An alleged ruling party leader has sold off hundreds of forest department trees reportedly worth Tk 2 lakh at Tanore upazila in Rajshahi.

Filing a general diary with Tanore Police Station yesterday, forest official Yusuf Ali said local BNP leader Mozammel Haque illegally sold the trees across Godagari Road through a secret auction.

Mozammel, also chairman of Saranjai union council, bartered some 60 Shishu and Akashmoni trees, incurring the government Tk 29,000 loss, he added.

However, witnesses claimed the BNP leader sold out hundreds of trees to a Pakri union contractor, who took away those as logs.

Mozammel could not be reached for comments despite repeated attempts.
