Rokan says By-polls illegal
Accuses govt of contempt of court

Supreme Court Bar Association President and lawyer for Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) Rokanuddin Mahmud yesterday said the Dhaka-10 by-polls "stands illegal" as the government has violated a High Court directive on army deployment.

"The High Court directed the government to deploy army personnel at every polling centre, but the government did not comply with it," Rokanuddin told newspersons.

Terming the violation a contempt of court, he said, "In terms of rigging, this election has surpassed the Magura by-polls of 1994."

On the other hand, Law Minister Moudud Ahmed rejected the allegation of contempt of court. "The court will decide whether it is contempt of court or not," he said.
