Hasina predicts rigged poll, flies off to Istanbul
UNB, Dhaka
Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina said yesterday morning people would be able to witness how vote rigging could take place in the Dhaka-10 by-polls. She said she had received information that cadres of the ruling BNP had already captured more than 30 polling centres and were intimidating voters. "I've also heard that many ballot boxes were stuffed on Wednesday night… if people get the chance they will reject sheaf of paddy and Falu," Hasina, also the president of the Awami League, told newsmen at Zia International Airport prior to her departure for Istanbul in the morning. "This government violated the order of the court and did not deploy army in every centre," she said. Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to attend a meeting of the founding members of D8, also known as the developing-8, marking its seventh founding anniversary, in Istanbul and deliver a speech on the occasion. The main function will take place today and tomorrow (July 2 and 3) and the former prime minister, a founding member of D8, is likely to rerun home on July 6. D-8 is an arrangement for development cooperation among the member countries of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. Apart from Hasina, former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohammad is also scheduled to attend the programme.
