Tube strike causes chaos for Commuters in London

Much of London's underground railroad system -- the tube -- was paralysed yesterday by a 24-hour strike by workers seeking shorter hours and more pay.

Hundreds of thousands of commuters jammed onto crowded buses or walked and cycled to work.

A few trains ran at irregular intervals on the District, Jubilee, Metropolitan and East London lines, but traffic came to a complete halt on the Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria, Circle, Central, Bakerloo, Waterloo and City lines.

The strike began at 6.30 p.m. (1730 GMT) Tuesday, and was due to end at the same time on Wednesday, but officials said the system would not return to normal until Thursday morning.

Some three million travelers daily use the tube, which is notorious for being creakingly ancient, erratic and prohibitively expensive.
