Pro-AL panel sweeps CU syndicate polls


Pro-Awami League and left leaning backed "yellow panel" swept the Chittagong University syndicate election here yesterday.

The syndicate is the highest decision making body of the university.

The election was held at the science faculty gallery from 9.00am to 1.00pm to elect representatives of four categories of teachers--professor, associate professor, assistant professor and lecturer. The "yellow panel" won three categories- professor, associate professor and assistant professor while the Jamaat backed candidate won the rest lecturer category. However, BNP backed teachers could not win a single post.

The newly elected "yellow panel" backed syndicate members are- Professor Quazi Mostain Billah (102 votes), Associate Professor Hossain Kabir (38 votes) and Assistant Professor Mahbubur Rahman (58 votes)

Jamaat backed "white panel" candidate Md. Saiful Islam (59 votes) was elected from the lecturer category.

The candidates of the BNP backed "white panel" Professor ANM Munir Ahmed got 29 votes, Md. Tayeb Chowdhury 4 votes, SM Nasrul Quadir 29 votes and Monzurul Kibria 15 votes.

Three other Jamaat backed "white panel" candidates who lost the race are-- Professor M Emdadul Haq (66 votes), Dr. Al Forkan (32 votes) and Dr. Towhidul Hasan (15 votes).

A total of 476 voters, out of 505, cast their votes while 11 ballots were cancelled.
