Tk175 cr SIDA grant for pry edn

Bangladesh will receive 250 million Swedish kroner, equivalent to Tk 175 crore, as grant from Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for Second Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP) -II project.An agreement to this effect was signed in the Economic Relations Division yesterday between Bangladesh and Sweden, says an official handout. SIDA will support the project as co-financier with ADB, IDA, DFID, EC, the Netherlands, Norway, CIDA, JICA, UNICEF and USAID. ADB is the leading donor of the project. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project worth Tk4933.08 crore on September 16 last year. The overall goal of the project is to reduce poverty through universal primary education and to contribute to sustainable socio-economic development and equity as envisaged in the Millennium Development Goals. The objective of PEDP-II is to provide quality primary education to all eligible children. Economic Relations Division Secretary Mirza Tasadduq Hussain Beg and Ambassador of Sweden in Dhaka Borje Mattsson signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.
