Rotary centennial year celebrations begin today

The Rotary International begins its 100th anniversary celebrations in the city today with a colourful procession. The procession will start from the Lalbagh fort at 7.00am. Rotary will celebrate its centennial year on February 23 next year with much enthusiasm and festivity, speakers said at a press conference yesterday. They said the Rotary always stands by the destitute. Rotary disbursed 22 million dollars for eradication of polio and 500 million dollars for arsenic mitigation and development of livestock and fisheries sector, said Rotary District Governor AKM Shamsuddin. In 2004-05, Rotary will focus on water management, healthcare, poverty alleviation and elimination of illiteracy, he added. Outgoing Rotary District Governor Mir Anisuzzaman, Rotarian Mustafa Zaman Abbasi and AP bureau chief Farid Ahmed also spoke.
