Indian economy grows 8.2pc

India's economy grew 8.2 percent in the year to March 2004 compared with 4.0 percent the previous year, according to government figures released Wednesday. The achievement, which puts India among the world's fastest growing economies, was possible due to good performances in the agriculture, manufacturing, electricity, trade and communication sectors, the figures showed. The government had forecast in February that growth would range between seven percent and eight percent. One of the best monsoons in years boosted the economy of the agriculture-dependent nation.
