S’pore tourism bounces back in a big way

Visitor arrivals here rose 271 percent in May from a year ago, when Singapore suffered a major setback due to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars), tourism officials said Wednesday.

Singapore welcomed 659,628 visitors in May this year, up nine percent from the same month in 2002 -- a comparison that the Singapore Tourism Board said was more meaningful due to the distortions caused by Sars.

Most of May's tourists came from Indonesia, China and India, which have been Singapore's top three markets in recent years, accounting for 39 percent of arrivals.

The three countries also posted the strongest growth rates among the top 13 markets, with Indonesian arrivals up 29 percent over 2002, China rising 24 percent and India up 23 percent.

The Philippines, Thailand and South Korea also showed double-digit growth rates as compared to 2002.
