GM Daewoo workers vote for strike
AFP, Seoul
Workers at US-owned GM Daewoo Auto and Technology, South Korea's third-largest automaker, approved a call for a strike Wednesday after talks with management on higher pay broke down, officials said. "A majority of unionized workers have voted for the strike but it remains to be seen if it leads to a real industrial action," a GM Daewoo spokesman told AFP, adding there would be more talks. Workers are demanding a hike of more than 16 percent in basic wages and are pushing for the firm's US owner, General Motors, to acquire an assembly plant west of Seoul, a union official said. Workers at Hyundai Motors, South Korea's top carmaker, Kia Motors and Ssangyong Motors have already launched strike action for higher pay. Union leaders at GM Daewoo said they were prepared to meet management for more talks before resorting to strike action.
