UN to send Bangladeshi peacekeeper's body back home

The body of Bangladeshi UN peacekeeper Maj Mohammad Shahjahan, killed in a UN helicopter crash on a remote hillside in Sierra Leone Tuesday, will be brought back home under UN arrangement, said an ISPR release yesterday.

The United Nations (UN), meanwhile, has formed a probe committee to investigate the helicopter crash that killed 24 peacekeepers and aid workers of several countries.

President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Army Chief Lt Gen Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury have expressed deep sorrow at the death of Maj M Shahjahan. He has left behind his wife, two children and a host of relatives.

In their messages, the president and the prime minister said the contribution and sacrifice made by late Maj Shahjahan will always be recalled.

They also prayed for salvation of late Shahjahan and conveyed sympathy to his bereaved family members.

Born in Comilla in November 1963, Maj Shahjahan joined the Engineering Corp of Bangladesh Army in 1984.

He left Dhaka for Sierra Leone on June 16 on a UN peacekeeping mission. Earlier in 1994, he served another UN peacekeeping mission in Mozambique.
