Akali MPs, Sidhu stage walkout as Sajjan takes oath

Akali Dal members along with BJP first timer Navjot Singh Sidhu yesterday staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha as Congress member Sajjan Kumar, alleged to be involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, took oath.As soon as Kumar's name was called for taking the oath, Akali members stood up and shouted slogans against him even as some Congress members said it was a matter of the past. However, pro tem Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said that peoples sentiments should be respected and they have a right to express it. He asked the proceedings to continue as the Akali members and Sidhu walked out. Also a large number of newly-elected MPs from several states took oath in the Lok Sabha on the second day on Thursday. Prominent among those who took oath on the second day were Ministers of State Subodh Kant Sahay and Sri Prakash Jaiswal, besides former Ministers PC Thomas, Jual Oram and Omar Abdullah. A number of members from West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Orissa and Rajasthan took oath. Four members from Jammu and Kashmir took oath in different languages. While Abdullah took oath in English, Abdul Rashid Shahin took it in Kashmiri, Thupstan Chhewang in Hindi and ML Sharma in Punjabi. All members from West Bengal took oath in Bengali barring Rupchand Murmu, who did it in Santhali. Most members from different states took oath in their mother tongue, while Sushil Modi took it in Sanskrit.
