Lead roles
Heart throbs of the small screen
The tale of a trio

In the mid 80s there was an acute dearth of romantic heroines on the TV screen. For one, Suborna, the icon of a romantic heroine, was not a frequent face on the screen. Secondly, since there was a shortfall of actresses who played romantic characters in that transitional period, the audience were in search of new talent.

It is against this backdrop, that three promising artistes appeared on the scene. The threesome, who occupied centre stage on the small screen, were Bipasha, Mimi and Shomi. Even now these actresses attract a big following among TV viewers.

The Daily Star spoke to these artistes about their work and other creative endeavours.

Bipasha: 'These days, I am busy taking care of my family. I am also doing a thesis on painting. A few days ago, along with my classmates of the Institute of Fine Arts, I arranged a joint exhibition in the Zainul Gallery. I am preparing to hold a solo painting exhibition at the end of the year.

In my little leisure time I am acting in a full-length film titled Joyjatra. I will play the role of a typical Bangali peasant wife in the film. In future I wish to direct a self-written play and I have already started work on the script. I sometimes perform in the single episode TV dramas. However, I am reluctant to perform on the stage.'

Mimi: 'I perform in TV plays regularly. I am the executive director of the popular mega serial Sharey Tin Tola. Within a few days I will start another mega serial. In June, I plan to go to UK to perform in a stage play arranged by the Bangali community. I will play the role of the protagonist in the stage drama Sayra, which is based on the true story of a Bangladeshi immigrant Sayra who married a British convict in 2001. The play is written and directed by Nababuddin. Sayra will be staged on Logan Hall after 17 days of rehearsing. Moreover, I will act in a stage play in Dhaka. I also want to take on the role of director within a few days.

Shomi: 'At present, I am busy with my production house. I am making ads and a few TV dramas also. Recently, I have performed in a film-- Lalon. Moreover, I am acting in few TV dramas and tele-films. I will shortly direct a TV play titled Tomay Dilam Prithibi. At present, I am not interested in returning to the stage.'
