Business team flies to Morocco today to attend ICC congress

A seven-member business delegation leaves here today for Marrakesh, Morocco to attend the 35th world congress of International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the world business organisation, beginning Sunday.ICC Bangladesh President Mahbubur Rahman will lead the delegation to the 4-day meet to be held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI of Morocco. Top political and business leaders from around the world, including WTO Director General Supachai Panitchpakdi and EU Commi-ssioner for TradePascal Lamy, will attend the meet. The congress will focus on the vital role of the businesspeople in making globalisation work to the advantage of people in all parts of the globe, said a press release. This congress is most likely going to make a major impact on the continuing stalemate in the world trading order, the release added. The key issues to be discussed include the overriding need for successful conclusion of the Doha trade round negotiations, potential of the internet as vector of economic growth and the business response to the growing threat of terrorism. On the third day of the congress, the ICC will give World Business Awards to 10 business-driven projects for their contributions to beating poverty and stimulating development. The awards will be given in association with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum. Other members of the delegation are ICCB vice presidents Latifur Rahman and Samson H Chowdhury, Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) Chairman Syed Manzur Elahi, Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) Chairman Nasir A Chowdhury, Managing Director of The Merchants Limited Mohammed Arshad Ali and Managing Director of Conexpo Limited Abu Alam Chowdhury.
