Lara to step down if Bangladesh not beaten

Brian Lara has said the West Indies should look for someone as new captain if his side fail to beat Bangladesh in five full days of cricket in the second Test at the Sabina Park in Kingston that starts today.

The world batting record-holder in Test and first class cricket made the statement at a press conference at the home team's hotel on Thursday when he was asked whether he was confident of a result in Windies' favour in the next five days.

"If we don't (beat them) then I don't think I'm going to lead the team if we have five days of cricket," said Lara before reiterating: "If we don't beat Bangladesh, who have not won a Test match and have drawn only three out of maybe 30, after five good days of cricket in Jamaica, I think we'll need another leader."

Lara insisted that the Bangladesh team deserved respect for their showing in Jamaica.

"They are improving and not a team that anybody is going to walk over if they are put under the right conditions. And they had conditions favouring them in St. Lucia. Coming out of the first Test, if you had assessed the performances, you'd say that Bangladesh played better than the West Indies. So credit must be given to them. They had three centurions and their fast bowling department was more disciplined than ours. So respect must be given to them."
