Three to die for killing 4 of a family in Bagerhat


Three people were sentenced to death and another was awarded life term and fined Tk 5000, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment for killing four members of a family at village Rajoir under Swarankhola upazila of Bagerhat district on July in 1998.

Md. Golam Rabbani, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Bagerhat delivered the judgement on Tuesday.

Three persons given death penalty are Ziauddin Howlader Zia, Tafalbari UP member Siddhique Gharami and primary school teacher Babul Akhand. Ziauddin is the prime accused in the murder case and the eldest son of Latif Howlader, one of the four victims.

Abdul Hakim, a Muhuri in Swarankhola sub-registrar's office, was given life term.

Of the convicts, Siddique Gharami and Babul Akhand were present in the court during the pronouncement of the Judgement while Ziauddin and Hakim were tried in absentia.

The prosecution story in brief is that Ziauddin Howlader alias Zia in connivance with three other accused hacked his father Latif Howlader,48, mother Samia Begum,38, brother Kamruzzaman alias Khokon, 14, and sister Shurma Akhtar Putul,18, to death to grab the valuable magnetic border pillars worth several crores of taka. The victims were drugged and murdered at the instigation of Hakim Muhuri, father-in-law of Ziauddin.
