MV Diganta rescue drive abandoned

Salvage of MV Diganta Express launch was abandoned yesterday due to strong current and heavy siltation on the sunken vessel 55 feet down the water, BIWTA officials said.The joint efforts of BIWTA, Coast Guard, Navy and district administration to salvage the launch since May 26 ended in a failure. The Narayanganj-bound launch from Tarki Ghat in Gournadi with 30 to 40 passengers on board was caught by storm and capsized on the night of May 22 in Meghna river. Some 14 passengers swam ashore while others feared drowned. Only eight bodies were recovered.
