Ershad sees united JP before polls

Chairman of Jatiya Party (JP) HM Ershad yesterday expressed optimism that the JP factions would unite before the next election to contest with a renewed vigour and determination.

"Efforts to reunite the three factions have already been initiated and I can assure you of the success as the other factions leaders too feel the same urge to get together," Ershad said.

Ershad, also a former president, said this while speaking at Face To Face With Women Journalists, a programme organised by Bangla-desh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (BCDJC) at its office in the city yesterday.

He said reunion talks with Anwar Hossain Manju and Shahidul Haque are on.

Lambasting the performance of the government and also of the main opposition he said people are deeply frustrated with the two major parties -- Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Awami League.

Replying to a query, he said JP signed the fourteenth amendment to the constitution last month to ensure women's participation in parliament.

The former president on the prospect of his party said, "Nothing's impossible, Jatiya Party might come to power in the next election. In fact, I am receiving overwhelming responses from people, especially from the villagers. They want to see me in power.

"

Bidisha Ershad, wife of the former president, also attended the programme moderated by Sabrina Karim Murshed of The Daily Star and Rosi Ferdousi of BSS.
