Tigers fight back

The Tigers yesterday staged a fabulous fightback on way to make 253 for nine at tea, taking a huge 317-run lead on the last day of the first Test against the West Indies at the largely empty Beausejour Stadium.

Former skipper Khaled Mashud, at his grittiest best, stroked a watchful 87 not out off 253 balls. His tired-looking partner Tapash Baishya, who gave off-spinner Chris Gayle a simple return catch off the last delivery before tea, played the second fiddle to reach 26. The two put on 74 off 183 balls to take the tourists out of any sorts of trouble.

Earlier, the tourists were 175 for seven at lunch thanks to Mashud and first innings centurion Mohammed Rafique who made 29.

The two had put on exactly 50 runs for the eighth wicket after Rajin Saleh was the only wicket to fall in the extended morning session.

Rajin displayed fighting qualities to bring the Tigers into contention after a late afternoon slump of Day Four, which saw them tumble to 79-6.

The diminutive Bangladesh vice-captain stood firm against the fast and furious West Indian pacers and scored a vital 51 off 101 balls before falling lbw to a Fidel Edwards reverse swinging delivery that came in. He shared 44 runs for the seventh wi-cket with Mashud, who also showed tremendous resilience under extre-me pressure.

The Tigers were fast approaching the comfort zone when Rafique and Mashud, mixing caution with aggression, added 52 runs for the unbroken eighth wicket.
