Tk 49 cr agri loss in Moulvibazar flash flood

Crops on 38, 285 acres of land were totally submerged due to flash flood in the district in April, according to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) here.The loss of agricultural products as estimated by the DAE is 49 crore taka. Boro crops on 24,700 acres of land, seedbeds on 24 acres, aman paddy on 321 acres and vegetables on 345 acres of land were completely damaged, according to the DAE statistics. Besides, different crops on 1,391 acres of land were partly damaged, the official statistics said. Farmers in Hakaluki and Hail haor areas are the worst affected as their Boro crops were totally inundated due to month long rainfall and onrush of hilly waters. Most of them have become destitute. Monu and Dhalali embankments were also damaged at different points. Bhukshimul Union Parishad (UP) chairman in Kulaura upazila Siraj Uddin Badshah revealed that at least 3,000 farmers in the union were affected. Of them about 2,000 farmers won't be able to harvest their crops at all due to complete inundation, the chairman added. Nazirabad UP Chairman in Sadar upazila Muazzem Hussain Matuk echoed the same and demanded allocation of agri-loan on soft term basis to the affected farmers. Moulvibazar Sadar, Kulaura, Kamalgonj, Srimangol and Rajnagar upazilas were affected by the untimely flood.
