Files case, gives 10 days' RI for assaulting plaintiff in dowry case

A judge here has filed a case against a man and convicted him to 10 days' rigorous imprisonment (RI) with a fine of Tk 1000 for assaulting a plaintiff to withdraw a dowry case on the court premises.The verdict was delivered in an hour by Judge Abdul Majid yesterday. The convict -- Mozammel Hossain, president of Majid Baria union in Mirgaganj upazila -- was arrested and sent to jail. He will have to suffer imprisonment for two days more for failing to pay the fine. Court sources said, Nayma Begum, had filed a case under the Woman and Children Repression Prevention Act against her husband and some others for demanding dowry. Yesterday, as she came on the court premises in connection with the case, Mozammel Hossain first threatened and then assaulted her to withdraw the case. As she cried for help, APP (Assistant Public Prosecutor) Humayun Kabir came to her rescue. Mozammel also assaulted him. As the matter was brought to the notice of Judge Abdul Majid, he filed a case against Mozammel and passed the verdict in an hour, the sources said. They said Mozammel had earlier tried to arbitrate the dowry demand.
