Kaptai plant runs at half its capacity
124 MW produced against 240 due to fall in water level Monirul Alam, Rangamati

Power generation at Kaptai hydro-electric plant has fallen drastically due to fall in water level of Kaptai lake.

The 240 MW capacity plant generated only 124 MW on Sunday.

The generation was 60 MW on May 22, 78 on May 23, 72 on May 24, 66 on May 25, 100 on May 26 and 129 MWT on May 27.

"Today we could operate four out of five units on a limited scale" Project Manager Mohammed Liakot Ullah told this correspondent on Sunday. One unit is inoperative due to mechanical fault.

Only two units were in operation in last two weeks till May 25, he said.

The water level started falling since March. It was 77:98 MSL (mean sea level) on Sunday, which allows operation of two units properly.

The level should be 106 MSL for running the four units, he said.

Five units of the plant have been set up at five different water levels to generate electricity.

"Generation will not increase if the water level does not rise"," Liakot said.
