Seminar at Satkhira Told
Govt-NGO cooperation needed to ensure safe drinking water


Speakers at a seminar on Saturday stressed on close cooperation of government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to ensure supply of safe drinking water by 2010 as planned by the government.

They were addressing a seminar on 'Scarcity of Safe Drinking Water and National Policy' organised by local NGO Uttaran at its training centre at Tala.

Speakers said access to safe drinking water is a fundamental right of the people. They further said over 40 lakh people in the south-western region lack access to safe water while scarcity of safe drinking water is increasing day by day due to salinity and arsenic contamination in surface and underground water.

Uttaran director Shahidul Islam moderated the seminar while RCC project co-ordinator Ashutosh Adhikari presented the key-note paper.

Uttaran programme officer Manirul Mamun presented a paper on scarcity of safe drinking water in south-western region of the country.

Professor Naser Ezazul Haq of the Department of Geology, Jahangirnagar University (JU), Ahsan uddin director, RVCC project of Bangladesh Pani Unnayan Parishad, Advocate Firoz Ahmed, Awami League leader Nazrul Islam, JSD leader Abdus Salam, Chairman Pranab Ghosh and Nazrul Islam were the main discussants.

Teachers, NGO activists, journalists, local government body representatives, civil society members and water committee members took part.
