NGOs exploiting hill people: Larma

The Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) chief Jotirindriya Bodhipriya Larma alias Santu Larma on Sunday alleged that NGOs (non-government organisation) are "exploiting" the poor in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)."I got complaints from people who failed to repay loan installments", he told a discussion on Micro Credit Activities, held at the Hill District Council Auditorium at Rangamati. It was jointly organised by the Community Development Centre (CODEC) and the Centre for Indigenous People's Development (CIPD). "NGOs are being used to serve the purpose of vested quarters. I am personally oppose to the NGO theory," he said. Instead of developing human resources, the NGOs are busy in business", Larma said. His comments however created a controversy among NGO officials and participants at the discussion, presided over by CODEC Deputy Executive Director Komol Sen Gupta. Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Dr Jafar Ahmed Khan and Hill District Council Member Sujit Dewan were special guests. CIPD Chief Executive Jono Chakma and Dr Md Fosiul Alam, management teacher at Chittagong University, presented two keynote papers on micro credit in Rangamati. They said micro credit inspires the recipients in income generating activities and thus brings about change in their life. Dr Prodanendu Chakma of Management Department at Dhaka University in another paper said micro credit should be expanded in the hill districts for poverty alleviation.
