The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to build four development centres in the city to provide practice facilities for young cricketers and local clubs. The BCB grounds and facilities committee, which will be in charge of the project, has chosen four locations for the centres, Rafiqul Islam Babu, member-secretary of the committee, said yesterday. The Dhaka University playground, Jagannath Hall ground, Gulshan Youth ground and Uttara Friends Club have been earmarked for the centres that will also have 15-20 practice pitches and a gymnasium. "The Board is concerned about providing cricketers with training facilities in the off-season. That was one of the reasons foreign coaches said our cricketers lack of fitness," Rafiqul told reporters. "Local schools and clubs will be able to use the facilities once we have them. The clubs however, will have to pay." There will be an administrator and a local coach at these facilities to help the cricketers. The decision was finalised in a meeting of the grounds and facilities committee on Sunday. The committee will prepare the budget and will go into action once the BCB approves the proposal. "This issue will be discussed in the Board's executive committee meeting on June 3. After Dhaka, we are interested in extending the same facilities in the districts," Rafiqul said. The grounds committee also decided to send a number of local curators for training in India. "We have one curator for each of the cricket grounds in the country now. The committee also approved their appointments on Sunday. This will help us to utilise all the grounds during the next domestic season," he added.
