Enayet collects Tk 50 lakh with promise of US immigration

Enayet Karim Chowdhury, detained for suspected links with the Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine blast, yesterday said he received Tk 50 lakh from 10 noted personalities of the country after he promised to win them immigration to USA.

The 10 very important persons (VIP) who were lured into paying him the hefty sum are of Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet, Enayet said.

Before the Joint Interrogation Cell (JIC), Enayet Karim also claimed himself to be the most powerful man in the politics of Bangladesh. He said all the 'Chowdhurys' are very influential in the government.

Karim confessed to having blackmailed not only the Bangladeshi politicians but politicians in the United States (US) too on several occasions.

Karim, a Bangladeshi born US citizen, was arrested on Monday from Chittagong and was placed on a 10-day remand.

He told the JIC that a top Jatiya Party (JP) leader while in USA requested him to return to Bangladesh and help unite the three factions of JP.

He said he met Ershad and his (Ershad) wife both in Bangladesh and aboard.

Karim's assistant Henry Gomez sent Tk 50 lakh to him by traveller's cheque (TC). Members of JIC will visit two foreign banks at Motijheel to verify the transaction.
