President Iajuddin Ahmed, also chancellor of the university, appointed Prof Faiz vice-chancellor of the university for a four-year term from a three-member elected VC panel on Sunday.

Earlier, the DU Senate had elected Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz, Pro-VC Prof AFM Yusuf Haider and Prof Wakil Ahmed unopposed to the three-member panel at a special meeting on May 23.

Prof Faiz has been working as VC since September 2002, shortly after the resignation of Prof Anwarullah Chowdhury from the post of the VC in the face of massive student protests against police atrocities inside Shamsunnahar Hall, a female dormitory of the university,

Talking to the reporters the newly appointed VC conveyed his thanks to the president, the prime minister and the senate members for giving him the opportunity to serve the university.

He sought cooperation of all, including teachers, students and officers of the university in conducting the academic activities in a congenial atmosphere.
