Manmohan says Indo-Bangla partnership key to foreign policy

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the importance of India-Bangladesh partnership remains a cornerstone of his government's foreign policy.

The new Indian premier made the remark in a letter to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, which was received here yesterday.

"My government is committed to building a mutually beneficial relationship with all our neighbours based on sensitivity to each other's core concerns," he said in the letter.

Thanking Khaleda for her letter of congratulations to him and for the sentiment she expressed, Singh said he fully reciprocates her views on the strength of bilateral relations rooted in historic and cultural links.

The Indian premier said, "As members of the South Asian community, it is essential that we cooperate to build a stable, prosperous and peaceful region both through bilateral process and Saarc (South Asian Association for Regional Coope-ration)."

He also wished to work closely with her to further intensify Dhaka-Delhi bilateral cooperation and promote regional cooperation.
