Nrityadhara celebrates International Dance Day
Cultural Correspondent
Nrityadhara, a dance organisation, held a cultural programme at the Mahila Shamiti auditorium to celebrate the International Dance Day recently. The members of Nrityadhara, and the audience marked the programme with the lighting of candles. It is a traditional Bangalee ritual to inaugurate any programme with candles, which is a symbol of happiness and gaiety. A veteran dancer of the country, Rahiza Khanom Jhunu was honoured with the Nrityadhara Award for her outstanding contribution to dance in the country. Eminent drama activist Ramendu Majumdar handed over the award to her. Overwhelmed, Jhunu expressed her deep gratitude to the organisation for the recognition. Drama activists Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu and Ataur Rahman also spoke on the occasion. The performance started with a welcome dance with the Tagore song Swakatore aj dakichhe shokole. Deepa Khondokar choreographed the dance piece. Colourful curtains, painted with Alpana (traditional Bangalee painting done on special occasions) beautified the stage. The Mangalpradips (small clay lamps) were put on stage in front of the dancers who were performing spectacular dance pieces. Dancers in colourful attires performed Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri, modern and folk. Celebrated dancers Munmun Ahmed, Minu Haq, Deepa Khondokar, Tamanna Rahman and Kabirul Islam Ratan did the choreography. Dance has the power to fascinate even a layman who does not understand the movements or Mudras.. The performances were appreciated and so was the lighting. The dancers in traditional dresses depicted the paintings of Ajanta and Ilora. The programme ended with a dance drama in which Deepa Khondkar played the lead role. The patriotic song Oi rail-liner dhare, portrayed the brutality that took place during our Liberation War. The members of Nrityadhara filled the gorgeous evening with spectacular performances.
