Observing May Day

Aronyak, a theatrical group arranged a programme beside the Shahid Minar premises on May Day morning to observe the day. Mamunur Rashid presided over the programme.

Badruddin Umar was the chief guest while Sarder Fazlul Karim was the special guest. The programme was hosted by Harunur Rashid.

Mannan Heera delivered the welcome speech. He said, 'Aronyak has been observing the day at the venue since 1983.' He added that for the betterment of the country the cultural and political leaders should work together.

Writer Badruddin Umar said, 'The cultural views of the middle class should be changed, otherwise the socio-political crisis of the country cannot be altered.'

Educationist Sarder Fazlul Karim narrated the history and significance of May Day.

Mamunur Rashid accused the middle class of being ignorant about the May Day. 'That is why they have little active participation in the programmes regarding the day,' he said. He also demanded that May Day should be observed like other National Days.

After the speeches, Hasan Arif and Liala Afroz recited poems on the struggle of the proletariats. Then poet Nirmulendu Goon recited some poems from his book Nirbachito 100 Kobita (selected 100 poems).

At the end of the programme Aronyak displayed a patha natok (street play) Monga Kahini, written and directed by Mannan Heera.

The play successfully portrays the sufferings of the peasants of Rangpur area and the politics of the corrupt leaders. Monga Kahini has the touch of traditional pala. The audience mostly comprising the working class thoroughly enjoyed the play.
