Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at around 9:00pm when the Tangail-bound bus from Mymensingh took the under-construction Bagutia bridge route instead of a bypass.

Three passengers of the bus died on the spot and two others died at a hospital. Four of the victims were Shahidul Islam, 27, Abdul Quddus, 32, Samir Ali, 28, and Rajon, 28, while the other victim's identity could not be known immediately.

Of the injured, 20 were admitted to Tangail General Hospital, while the rest received first aid.
