Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Police arrested a key suspect in the largest ever gunrunning case on a road near KAFCO residential area in Chittagong on Saturday evening, police said. Acting on a tip-off, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police blocked the road and arrested Jasim Uddin, younger brother of pro-Jamat labour leader Din Mohammad, who was riding on a motorcycle. Both Jasim and Din are accused of offloading the biggest arms haul including rockets, rocket launchers, grenades, AK-47 rifles and ammunition on the Karnaphuli coast on April 2. Jasim was taken to a court yesterday which remanded him in police custody for two days for questioning. Police said they obtained important information and whereabouts of Din grilling him, but declined to give details. Din went into hiding after arms seizure. Police said they were also looking for Hafizur Rahman, Haji Sobhan, Abul Kasem Modhu and Barmaiya Jahur, a Rohingya businessman, for their links to the gunrunning.
